A Beautiful Harlan Tuesday

The picture above was taken out the front door of our center. Not a bad view, huh? Can't wait to wake up to this every morning for the next 9 weeks.

What a great day! First of all, since I am the Operations Coordinator, it's my job to order all food, plan meals, work with the cooks, etc. I made our first bulk food order and I have our menu all planned out. It was pretty empowering, purchasing close to $3,000 in food, but hey, we've got LOTS of hungry volunteers to feed starting next week! It feels really good having all the food planned out and ordered. Just a few more things to get now, it should be easy.

Also, and more exciting, today was my first day on Initial Home Visits. This is when, after reviewing applications, we go out in staff pairs and visit the homes to see their condition, meet the families, and take notes as to help us decide which homes we want to work on for the summer. I went on IHVs with our center director, Jenny, today, and we saw a lot of great homes with great families. I already see there will be a few families we work with this summer that I will learn a lot about life and faith. Also, leaving these families at the end of the summer will be hard.

I was able to do a lot of driving today, and that allows for a lot of thinking time, which I love. I couldn't see myself doing anything but this for the summer. This is where I belong right now. It's the perfect time and place for me to get a new start to my life plan and reboot my faith and connection with God. I was unsure about applying in December, and I finally did it sorta last minute, because I didn't see why it would hurt. After going to my staff applicant weekend (SAW), I felt like this was the right path for me. But now that I am actually here and taking part in what it takes to be an ASP staffer, I feel like this is completely where I belong, and I fully plan on doing it again next summer instead of taking summer classes. Five years in undergrad, here I come! But it's going to be completely worth it, and I know that already. And the fun part hasn't even begun :)

Miss you all, and send me mail! I would love to go to the post office soon and see a letter for me! I promise I'd even write back!

Love you all,

Margie

  1. Dear Margie,

I'm so happy you feel that you're exactly where you should be! I'm sure you knocked the socks off that meal schedule. 3rd grade Sunday school seems light years away; now we're off on adventures. I was reading (in my 3rd grade bible I might add) a verse that I thought might be inspirational for you this summer.

"He has told you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord ask of you? To do justice, love in kindness and walk humbly with your God." Micah 5.14

I'm sure somewhere in your ASP training that came across your radar, but I though of you when I was reading it and wanted to share.

You are an amazing and I'm sure God will open lots of doors and windows in and through you this summer.

    Love,

    Mandy
